Get A FREE Credit Report

It is advisable to get a copy of your credit report at least once a year. This is held in such high regard that many states mandate a free copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus every year. The reason behind this is two-fold. One, a person that actually takes the time to look at their credit report is more likely to take measures to improve it, assumedly bettering the economy one person at a time. However, the primary reason for these statutes is in fraud prevention. It is suggested to check your credit report once a year to make sure there are not charges or balances being incurred in your name that are not legitimate.

In this day and time, it is increasingly easier to obtain a person’s confidential financial information. Because your social security number is floating around everywhere, it takes little effort to obtain the necessary information to steal your identity and begin acquiring credit in your name.

Although a yearly credit report is essential, there are other circumstances where an additional report may be necessary or at the very least, an early review of your report.

Few people are aware they should be getting a copy of their credit report when they are relocating, but the moving process makes it easier to have access to your financial and personal information. While you should report your address change well in advance to all of your financial accounts, you should also file a change of address form with the post office. However, there is still a possibility of your mail going astray and your information being at risk. Most credit cards provide fraud prevention protection in which you are not liable for fraudulent charges; however, it is your responsibility to know if your financial information is at risk.

On the same token, if you hire a moving company to pack and/or move your belongings, you open yourself and your information to possibly being misused. Although you should research any company or service you utilize, you can never be absolutely sure the company you use practices the same
